Premium handmade acetate offers a high-end feel and allows for unique color combinations and styles. Most of our acetate frames are built with adjustable wire-core temples for a custom fit and extra style.

Arc® Lens Technology

Replacement lenses are sold separately for the Performance Series. The Alpha “Commando Kit” options include various lens color combinations and a custom micro fiber carrying bag. The Visual Light Transmission (VLT) range for our lenses goes from ‘100’ (100% of light goes through) to ‘0’ (no light comes through). Clear lenses get a rating of ‘100’ but still offer 100% UV protection.

Base Curvature

SPY’s spherical sunglasses are available in 4, 6, 8, or 9-Base. “Base curve” refers to the amount of “wrap” that a lens has, which in turn affects the curvature of the frame. A flatter lens—such as a 4-Base—will create a much flatter, squared frame shape, whereas a higher base number will cause a sleek, wraparound fit. 4 BASE. As flat as it gets, our 4-base lenses are for straight-up fashion purists. 6 BASE. A middle-ground curve, not too little, not to much. For that “classic” style. 8 BASE. A good strong wrap that works well for both function and fashion. 9 BASE. The strongest curvature we offer for a sleek, athletic and functional fit.

Grilamid™ Frames

SPY uses flexible Grilamid™ in its Scoop® Series and other sport-friendly styles. Grilamid™ frames are shatter-resistant, comfortable, and ready to take on the world in any climate condition.

Hytrel™ Rubber

The Hytrel™ rubber found on Scoop® frame nose pieces and temples is a unique hydrophilic compound that increases in tackiness when introduced to moisture. When you sweat, Hytrel™ keeps your shades firmly in place and ensures a longer ride.

Lens Material

POLYCARBONATE. Shield glare while maximizing optical quality lenses that are ultra tough and shatter resistant. NYLON. Lightweight premium optical quality lenses that are virtually impervious to cracking. CR39. Rich color tinting and scratch resistance while keeping true optical accuracy.

Monel Alloy

Monel is an engineered alloy of Nickel, Silver and Copper that creates a lightweight, yet extremely durable frame. Monel Alloy is malleable, corrosion-resistant and hypo-allergenic for well-fitting and long-wearing shades.

Propriate Frames

SPY is one of a few elite manufacturers to offer frames crafted in premium Propionate. Frames constructed fashioned in Propionate have a sleek, dense finish that is modern, comfortable, and durable.

Scoop® Venting System

SPY’s patented Scoop® venting system combats lens fogging by promoting airflow between the lens and the wearer’s face. Scoop® forces air through strategically placed vents of varying aperture on the frame, effectively shutting down fog and keeping your vision clear.

Spherical Lens Curvature

Traditional spherical lenses have a consistent vertical and horizontal curve in the lens. If the edge of the lens were to continue around back to itself, it would form a spherical shape. All SPY lenses use this common method unless otherwise noted.

Toric Lens Curvature

A Toric lens has differing horizontal and vertical base curves—meaning that vertically the curvature is different than the horizontal curvature. This shape of lens allows a unique appearance that is very wearable and gives larger, high-wrap frames a modern look and feel.

Trident Polarized Lenses

All of SPY’s polarized sunglasses feature premium injected Trident lenses. Trident lenses diffuse glare through the use of an integrated polarizing filter layered within the injected lens, allowing incredible clarity even in the harshest conditions. Trident Polarized lenses are of the highest quality available, and effectively eliminates more than 99% of blinding glare. Polarized lenses act like slatted window blinds—when light hits a reflective surface it bounces and scatters, reducing contrast and clarity. The “blinds” in our Trident lenses block scattered light rays but let in the “right” light, allowing you to see clearly and fight eye fatigue.
